Getting to Ella
By Train (Highly Recommended)
The train journey from Kandy to Ella via Nanu Oya is one of the most celebrated train journeys in the world. The route winds through the central highlands, past tea estates and waterfalls, across viaducts, and through tunnels. Seats on the left side of the train (when travelling from Kandy) face the best views.
- From Kandy: 6–7 hours, $3–10 USD depending on class. First class observation carriage seats ($10 USD) must be booked well in advance through the Sri Lanka Railways website or 12Go.asia.
- From Colombo Fort: 9–10 hours. Take the overnight train or the morning train via Kandy.
Book ahead: First and second class seats on this route sell out weeks in advance in peak season. Third class has no seat reservations and is standing-room only at busy times.
By Bus or Car
Buses run from Colombo ($4–6 USD, 6–7 hours) and Kandy ($2–3 USD, 4–5 hours). A private car from Kandy costs $45–70 USD. The road journey is scenic but winding.
What to Do in Ella
1. Little Adam's Peak
The most accessible and popular hike from Ella. A 2.5km trail through tea plantations leads to a summit ridge with panoramic views of the Ella Gap and surrounding mountains.
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Time: 1.5–2 hours return
- Start: From the 98 Acres Resort road, 15-minute walk from Ella town
- Best time: Early morning (7am–9am) before crowds and cloud
2. Nine Arch Bridge
Sri Lanka's most photographed structure — a 91-metre stone viaduct built in 1921 without a single piece of steel. The bridge is still in active use; watching a train cross it against the backdrop of jungle and tea bushes is unforgettable.
- Getting there: 20-minute walk from Ella town, or 5-minute tuk-tuk ($2–3 USD)
- Best time: When trains pass (roughly every 1–2 hours; check the schedule and arrive 15 min early)
- Top vs bottom view: The view from below (the main viewpoint) is classic. For a different angle, walk through the tea estate to the upper path.
3. Ella Rock
A more challenging hike than Little Adam's Peak, but rewards with far better views and far fewer people. The trail is not well-marked — hire a guide or download a GPS track before going.
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
- Distance: 8km return
- Time: 4–5 hours
- Start: Via the train line near the Ella train station (follow the tracks south)
- Best time: Early morning start (6am)
4. Ravana Falls
A 25-metre waterfall 6km from Ella, accessible by tuk-tuk ($4–6 USD return). It is one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and impressive after rain. The site has a small café and swimming is occasionally possible in the lower pool.
5. Tea Plantation Walks and Factory Visits
Several tea estates around Ella offer guided walks and factory tours showing the tea-making process from leaf to cup.
- Cost: $5–15 USD including tea tasting
- Options: 98 Acres (1km from Ella), numerous smaller estate operations
- Duration: 1–2 hours
6. Demodara Loop and Station
The Demodara train station, 3km from Ella, sits at the top of a famous railway engineering feat — the train spirals inside a tunnel beneath itself to descend the mountain. Worth the short tuk-tuk ride to see it and watch a train disappear into the hillside.
Where to Eat
Ella has an excellent food scene disproportionate to its small size.
Ella's Best Roti (budget): Simple café famous for enormous, cheap kottu roti ($2–4 USD). Long queues — arrive early or late.
Curd and treacle: A traditional Sri Lankan dessert — thick buffalo curd with dark treacle. Available everywhere. Eat it at a local dairy stall for $1–2.
Amba ($8–18 per main): Creative pan-Asian food in a beautiful jungle setting. Excellent cocktails. One of the best restaurants in Sri Lanka's hill country.
98 Acres Restaurant ($15–30 per main): Spectacular views over the Ella Gap, sophisticated Sri Lankan and international menu. Dinner here at sunset is a highlight.
Where to Stay
Budget ($15–35/night): Ella has dozens of guesthouses with basic but comfortable rooms. Ask to see the room before committing — quality varies.
Mid-range ($45–100/night): Several boutique properties with mountain views. Air conditioning is rarely necessary at Ella's altitude — fans are sufficient.
Recommended:
- 98 Acres Resort ($120–200/night): The most beautiful property near Ella. Infinity pool, incredible views. Worth splurging for 1–2 nights.
- Zion View ($60–100/night): Clean, well-run, excellent views.
Practical Information
Weather: Ella's altitude keeps temperatures comfortable year-round (16–28°C). Mornings can be misty. Rain is possible at any time, particularly from May–July and October–November.
Getting around: Ella town is small enough to walk. Tuk-tuks are abundant for reaching the Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Falls, and hiking trailheads.
Money: ATMs are available in Ella town. Card acceptance has improved but carry cash for guesthouses and local restaurants.
Connectivity: Good WiFi at most guesthouses and cafés. Mobile data coverage is patchy on the hiking trails — download offline maps before heading out.
